Parenting is a learned behavior & skill

Unlike popular opinion tends to suggest, parenting is not a skill that just materializes upon the birth of a child. Parenting is a skill we mimic based upon, and affected by, our perceptions of how we were parented.

Which brings us to our next question…

Which would you choose?

  1. Surgery performed by A) a surgeon that regularly stays updated on the latest procedures, findings, and technologies, or B) a surgeon who is still operating under the procedures, findings, and technologies acquired when he graduated from med school back in the 1960s?

Like the surgeon above, which parent are you – A) or B)? Meaning…

    1. Are you 100% cool knowing that you’re parenting like your parents parented?
    2. Are you sure that how you’re currently parenting is going to equip your child to be the success in life that every parent wants their child to be?
    3. Are you sure the techniques your parents used on you even apply to the issues families have to deal with today?

Often, these influences are unexpected, if not just plain unheard of before. As much of a blessing as the internet has been, have you noticed how much it has affected, if not made ineffective, most of the parenting staples we just knew we could rely on?

To best manage the influx of new technologies, new norms, and new information being tossed our way daily, our parenting NEEDS to adapt and grow with the times. And parenting education is the vehicle to accomplish this, because “the more you know, the more options you have”.

This doesn’t mean giving up your values, but rather how you instill them. Otherwise, using old techniques with new and often complex circumstances and challenges (like juvenile delinquency, substance abuse, teen pregnancy, cyberbullying, even suicide) can become just plain OVERWHELMING.
